Muskoka, Ontario is Canada’s premier vacation destination. Visitors are drawn to this beautifully scenic region. For more than a century, Muskoka vacationers have been attracted by its many sparkling lakes, towering pines and majestic granite outcroppings, vibrate towns and villages, and wealth of recreational activities. And, all this and more is within a short drive from the GTA.
No wonder Muskoka is a favorite Ontario cottage country playground for so many. When you vacation at Sherwood Inn, you’re in the heart of Muskoka, surrounded by all the best that Muskoka has to offer and close to many of area’s major attractions. And Sherwood Inn is located on beautiful Lake Joseph, one of the most desirable lakes in Muskoka. Lake Joseph, or Lake Joe as it is affectionately called by longtime cottagers, is one of Muskoka’s ‘Big Three’ lakes. The Big Three; Lake Rosseau, Lake Muskoka, and Lake Joseph, are each large and very scenic lakes. They are undoubtedly the most coveted lakes in Ontario, dotted with small islands, high-end resorts, and million dollar mansion cottages lining the shores. The three lakes are interconnected and offer many miles of fabulous freshwater boating. Lake Joseph sits at the top of Muskoka’s Big Three. To its immediate east is Lake Rosseau. Access from Lake Joseph to Lake Rosseau is through the narrows at Port Sandfield and the Joseph River. Lake Muskoka, the largest of the three, is to the south. Access from Lake Rosseau to Lake Muskoka is via the Indian River and the Port Carling lock system.
With hundreds of miles of varied shoreline and over 300 islands to explore, not only are Lake Joseph and its connecting lakes excellent fresh water boating lakes, they offer outstanding fishing as well. Clean, healthy, and exceptionally clear, Lake Joseph’s shoals, reefs, steep drops offs, and bays with good weed beds are home to many fish species, including pike, walleye, white fish, largemouth bass, herring, and especially lake trout and smallmouth bass.
Sherwood Inn is close to the pretty little town of Port Carling. Known as the “Hub of the Muskokas” because of all the boat traffic that flows through town, Port Carling is a great place to visit any time of the year, but really comes alive during the busy summer months when visitors, cottagers and boaters converge on this picture-postcard Muskoka town. While in Port Carling, be sure to visit some of its gift shops, boutiques, and galleries. Stop for a bite to eat at one of its many restaurants, and be sure to visit the locks and park at the centre of town to watch the boats go by.
Open from Victoria Day through Thanksgiving weekend, The Muskoka Lakes Museum in Port Carling has been delighting and educating visitors for over 50 years. This popular Muskoka attraction brings to life the area’s storied past, examining the lives of its aboriginal peoples and early settlers. Visitors to the Museum will also learn about the development of Muskoka and the industries that contributed to the area’s growth, including the lumber industry, boat building, transportation, and tourism. A top Muskoka attraction and cultural centre, the Muskoka Museum has something of interest for every member of the family, including permanent and short-term exhibits, student programs, adult workshops, lectures and special events. Every month there is a new exhibit on display new art show featured in the adjoining Catto Art Gallery. The museum has multiple marine and pioneer displays, including dozens of antique wood pleasure boats and motors, a log cabin circa 1875, and early First Nations artifacts.
